Writing a letter in Russian?

I'm writing two letters to some Ukrainian friends of mine, who speak Russian (they're in Kherson). How would I put the greeting on it? I've heard of Дорогой, but I'm a bit wary because I heard that can mean "dear" and imply affection. What should I use? Does it change on whether I'm writing to a boy or a girl? How can I close?
